Tiling a wooden floor it must be sound with no flexing. Firstly overlay the floor with 9mm minimum plywood, screwed at 200mm centers. Then a solid bed fixing the tiles with cement based flexible adhesive. The floor must be dry fully before grouting (minimum of 24 hours). Then using a cement based wide joint grout with added flexibility.
Polished porcelain Tiles need to be sealed with a good impregnator sealer, lay the tiles give the full floor a good coat of impregnator sealer then grout, reason you seal polished porcelain is that the polishing process open millions of tiny holes in the tiles surface and dirt and grime can get into them and cause dulling. Matt porcelain tiles need sealing too.
Porcelain tile requires the finest natural ingredients and a rigidly controlled manufacturing process that utilizes the most advanced processes and technology.
Porcelain Tiles are known for their durability and zero-maintenance qualities which make them a favorite for use in areas that are exposed to heavy wear and tear. Especially when there is an opportunity to use a heavy duty material without having to compromise on aesthetic appeal.
Sealing your stone tiles are a must. Based upon the type of stone you choose, the appropriate stone sealer will protect your floor from staining. Stone does not have a fired surface like ceramic and porcelain tiles which do not need to be sealed (except polished porcelain). Natural Tile products use Stain Stop before tiling, and seal guard once the tiles have been fixed giving the tiles and grout more protection.
Maintenance
Once your floor is cleaned and sealed, it will only need an occasional mop over every 2 weeks or so. Do not use strong domestic floor cleaners (e.g. Flash) as these can attack the seal. We recommend that you use HG Superfloor maintenance cleaner in your washing water, as this helps protect the finish. You may find that after 6 to 12 months, the sheen may fade where it is walked on most. You can top up the sheen with another coat of HG Golvpolish.
Ceramic floor finishes require little maintenance and are easily kept clean by regular sweeping and then washing with warm water to which a soap less detergent has been added.we often get asked to recommend a sealer for Ceramic Tiles; the simple answer is they don't need one, however the grout which is porous will.
INGRAINED DIRT
HG REMOVER is recommended by the manufacturer as being suitable for the deep cleaning of Victorian floor tiles.
CEMENT DEPOSITS
HG EXTRA. This is an acid based cleaner so care is needed, and hands should be protected. Allow sufficient ventilation since the smell can be unpleasant. Acid based cleaners should be used for nothing other than cleaning cement-based stains, usually from the tile adhesive. It is important that a thorough rinsing with clean water immediately follows this treatment.
OIL and GREASE
HG YELLOW REMOVER or a highly alkaline detergent with pH level greater than 9.
GENERAL CLEANING
Use warm water and a neutral sulphate-free detergent e.g.HG SUPERFLOOR MAINTENANCE CLEANER. Household soaps are not recommended as they leave a slippery scum, especially in hard-water areas.
SEALING
After the thorough cleaning of the floor the tiles need to be sealed against further staining. This can be achieved by using HG IMPREGNATOR. Only one coat will be necessary and in domestic situations this single coat will last a lifetime. In commercial or heavy traffic areas the floor will need to be stripped approximately every two years and a new coat of sealant applied. It is most important to remove any excess prior to drying, to prevent a streaky appearance.
POLISHING
HG GOLVPOLISH is recommended by the manufacturer as requiring low maintenance.
Remember: It is important to ensure that any cleaning agents used should be completely removed by final rinsing with clean water.
